Maspalomas, Canary Islands: Slovakia won the Fed Cup for the first time as its teenage sensation wore out a Spanish veteran and the tournament's top record-holder, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, succumbed to injury. Daniela Hantuchova beat Conchita Martinez 6-7 (8/10), 7-5, 6-4 and Janette Husarova downed Sanchez-Vicario 6-0, 6-2, giving the Slovaks a 3-1 lead. It was a disappointing performance for Sanchez-Vicario as she played in her record 100th Fed Cup match. Hantuchova, the tall and brilliant Slovak ranked 8th in the world, ground down 30-year-old Martinez in a reverse singles match that lasted 3 hours, 20 minutes. Spain had been vying for its sixth Fed Cup on the strength of Martinez and Sanchez-Vicario, who have now appeared in the finals 10 times. Sanchez-Vicario also holds Fed Cup records for the number of ties she has played in (58) and number of matches won (72). (AP)
