Santiago: Andy Roddick defeated Nicolas Massu 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday to give the United States a 1-0 lead against Chile in the first round of the Davis Cup series.
Massu, the 2004 Olympic gold medallist in singles and doubles, was encouraged throughout the match by chanting fans. But Roddick raced through the first set before Massu settled down.
The Chilean player broke serve once in the match, in the first game of the second set. Roddick managed the same feat in each of the remaining two sets to win the match.
