New York:
Unlikely Wimbledon runner-up David Nalbandian of Argentina couldn't continue his incredible Grand Slam run Wednesday, losing to unseeded Sargis Sargsian of Armenia 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round at the US Open. The 16th-seeded surprise finalist at tennis' most famous event, ranked 16th in the world, was beaten soundly by Sargsian in the first set. Nalbandian made 13 unforced errors. The 20-year-old's only highlight of the set came in the sixth game. After already being broken in his first two service games, he was down three set points before winning six in a row to hold serve. Sargsian, ranked 92nd, then took the set on his service game. In the second set, Sargsian opened with a break before both players held serve the rest of the way, giving the Armenian a comfortable cushion heading into set No 3. Sargsian had a few chances to take his third straight opening-game in the third set, but Nalbandian fought off several break points to hold serve after five deuces. Sargsian got to him in the seventh game, however, breaking after a deuce to lead 4-3. He then held at love and served out the set in the 10th game, despite double-faulting twice and fighting off a break point. Besides his amazing run at Wimbledon, where he became the first Argentine to make a Wimbledon final in his first grass-court tournament, Nalbandian also won the Estoril Open in Oeiras, Portugal, in April. At the US Open last year, he reached the third round. Sargsian, who did not play at the US Open in 2001, reached the third round in 1997 and 1995. This year, he was a quarterfinalist in Memphis and Milan.(AP)Topics mentioned in this article
