Palermo: Filippo Volandri of Italy advanced to his third successive Palermo International final when Nicolas Almagro of Spain retired with a left ankle injury on Saturday. Second-seeded Volandri was leading 6-0, 2-1 when No 4 Almagro couldn't go on with an injury he first sustained in Friday's quarterfinals. Volandri's opponent in Sunday's final will be unseeded Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, who beat Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain 6-2, 6-1 to reach his first ATP final in three years. Lapentti broke the eighth-seeded Ramirez Hidalgo six times. Volandri lost the 2004 final to Igor Andreev and in 2005 to Tomas Berdych. He's only 1-6 in career finals, and this will be his third this year. His only title was 2004 St Poelten. Lapentti's sixth and last title was at 2002 St Poelten. He beat Volandri in their only other meeting, also on clay, at Hamburg in 2004. (AP)
