Jakarta:
World No 2 Lindsay Davenport says the high number of tournaments female tennis players must play each year to maintain their rankings is leading to injuries and spoiling tennis as a spectator sport. "I think it's too much, we have a really tough schedule," Davenport was quoted as saying by The Jakarta Post. "The tour wants us to play 11 months of the year and yet still stay fit." Many players compete in a punishing 17 or 18 international tournaments each year to defend their ranking points, up from around 12 in the early 1990s. Davenport, who is in Indonesia for this week's Wismilak International, said she hoped the female tour would cut back on the number of tournaments. "It will make for a better product and for better tennis for the fans," the American said. Davenport was sidelined for two months earlier this year due to a back problem. Several top female tennis players have been injured for long periods this year, including Serena Williams and US Open champion Kim Clijsters. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
