Adelaide:
Richard Krajicek returns to tournament tennis next week at the AAPT Championships after yet another long injury layoff - this time since last September's US Open. Krajicek, who will play Australian Scott Draper in the first round of the AAPT Championships at Memorial Drive, made the Wimbledon quarterfinals this year after a 20-month layoff with knee and elbow injuries. He then injured his heel in the first round of the US Open and has not played since. He said he was back to full fitness and practicing well but needs some wins in the lead-up to the Australian Open that begins on January 13. "Hopefully in the next couple weeks and this week also I can win some matches, get some confidence, and you never know what's going to happen," he said. Krajicek said Draper is always dangerous. "You have to expect he can suddenly come out and swing a couple big returns, but he can also suddenly hit a few double-faults and miss a few easy shots, so you have to be on your toes against him," he said. South Africa's Wayne Ferreira, the world No. 39 and tournament top seed, will play Argentina's Franco Squillari in the first round of the 32-man tournament. Australia's junior Wimbledon champion, Todd Reid, who received a wild card into the Adelaide event, will play eighth-seeded Vincent Spadea of the United States in the first round.
