Dubai:
Roger Federer struggled past Czech qualifier Ivo Minar 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) when he began the defence of his Dubai Open title on Wednesday. The Swiss world number one took almost two hours to edge through against an opponent who has won just five matches in his career. In contrast, there were comfortable wins in the second round for fourth seed American Andre Agassi and sixth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko. Fourth seed Andre Agassi had no such problems against Feliciano Lopez of Spain, running away with the first set for the loss of just one game. Agassi was always in control against the left-handed Lopez, sweeping to a 4-0 lead in the opening set and winning most of the longer rallies. Although Lopez offered more resistance in the second set and held a break point at 4-3, he made a backhand error and was broken to love in the next game before Agassi served out to seal the 6-1, 6-3 win in just under an hour. Sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko was another straight sets winner. The Russian beat Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia 7-5, 6-3. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
