Zurich:
Anastasia Myskina and fellow Russian Elena Dementieva, who have been rivals since childhood met in the quarter-finals of the Zurich Open on Friday. The seventh seed Myskina drew first blood by taking the opening set 6-3. Dementieva, who won their last meeting in Moscow last week but had conceded their previous four matches, looked the better player tactically and took the second set 7-1 on a tiebreak. Good serve Myskina gained a 5-2 lead in the final set, but within minutes she dropped her serve to love and the fourth seeded Dementieva had a chance. But she was unable to capitalise and Myskina held her nerve to clinch the match 6-3 6-7 (7-1) 6-4. "Definitely playing smarter and my serve today was much better than last week. I've improved from last week and I've been serving a lot. My shoulder was feeling good. That's why I guess that helped me," said Myskina. Former champion Patty Schnyder met Italy's Flavia Pennetta in another quarter-final on Friday and the unseeded Italian, a lucky loser from qualifying, outplayed the sixth seed in the first set, to take it 6-2 with an ace. Trading breaks Schnyder and Pennetta, who has won twice on tour this year, traded breaks in the second set, before the Swiss broke in the 10th game to take the set 6-4. The sixth seed pulled away in the final set and won 2-6 6-4 6-2 when Pennetta's shot clipped the net and landed out. In Saturday's semi-finals, she will face unseeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia-Montenegro, who beat Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik 6-3 6-1. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
