Paris:
Unseeded Argentine Gaston Gaudio defeated an injured compatriot Guillermo Coria to win the 2004 French Open title in five gruelling sets. Third seed Coria played the fourth set at walking pace and barely served at half-pace in the closing stages. Gaudio fought back from two sets down to clinch the title in three hours 31 minutes with 0-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 8-6. Coria jumped to 3-0 in the first set having broken Gaudio's serve in the opening game of the first set. Coria wrapped up the first set 6-0 in just 27 minutes, Gaudio not helping his cause with two double faults and 16 unforced errors. Not much changed in the second set, although Gaston Gaudio was given a standing ovation after holding onto his serve in the third game. Gaudio managed to win only two more games in the second set, but after 37 minutes a great drop volley from Coria and the third seed wrapped up the second set 6-3. Gaudio finally came to his own in the third set, breaking Coria in the tenth game to and then holding his serve to win the set 6-4. The fourth set was a one sided affair and Coria seemed to have lost the will to even fight on, let alone win as Gaudio wrapped up the set 6-1. And finally, the 25 year old Gaudio saved off two Championship points to finally land his first ever Grand Slam title. Gaudio became the first Argentine to win a Grand Slam title since the legendary Guillermo Vilas won at Roland Garros in 1977 and the first Argentine to win a Grand Slam title since Vilas won the 1979 Australian Open.Topics mentioned in this article
