Perth:The United States of America clinched a place in the final of the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia on Friday after Lindsay Davenport beat Russia's Anastasia Myskina 6-4, 6-4 in the opening match of the defending champion's Group A tie with Russia. Russia needed to win all of the ties' three matches to win Group A and deny the USA a place in the final. USA will advance to meet Australia on Saturday in what will be a repeat of last year's final. The Russian duo of Anastasia Myskina and Marat Safin needed to win all of three of the ties' matches in order to finish above the USA in Group A and earn a place in the tournament final against Australia. Myskina was broken on her first two service games in the women's singles, as opponent Lindsay Davenport jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Struggling on her first serve, Davenport allowed Myskina back into the first set when she was broken in the eighth game, but the American served out at the second time of asking to take it 6-4. The second set followed a similar pattern with Myskina being broken twice, before stopping Davenport taking the set, and the match, in the eighth game with a break of her own. But, just as she had in the first set, Davenport made the most of her second opportunity, sealing a 6-4, 6-4 victory for a 1-0 lead in the tie. (AP)
