World No. 2 two Kim Clijsters has pulled out of the French Open because of a wrist injury, she has said on her internet site. The 20-year-old Belgian, who was runner-up to compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final at Roland Garros in 2003, had already pulled out of her comeback tournament, the German Open in Berlin on Thursday, as well as the next week's Italian Open. "Kim Clijsters was forced to withdraw from the French Open, the second Grand Slam tournament of the season," said a statement on her website Friday. "She visited a doctor and must observe a complete rest on her injured wrist. Otherwise, this could become a more serious injury", the statement added. Her coach Marc Dehous told Belgian radio that the recovery time will be at least five weeks. Doubtful for Wimbledon That could even threaten her participation at Wimbledon. Clijsters, who was also French Open runner-up in 2001, hurt her wrist in mid-March and was forced to withdraw from the Indian Wells event because of left wrist tendonitis. She was off the tour for seven weeks although she did play for the Belgian Fed Cup team last month. She returned to competition in Berlin this week but her wrist reacted badly to her tough opening match against Marta Marrero and she immediately pulled out of the event as well as next week's tournament in Rome. Henin-Hardenne, who returned to training last week after battling a virus similar to glandular fever, is still doubtful of defending her title at the French Open.
