Stuttgart: There was a big surprise on the first day of the ATP Mercedes Cup in Germany when 18-year-old Andreas Beck clinched a comfortable victory over Alexander Peya from Austria. The local lad only earned his place in the tournament with a wild card entry and now is set to face the Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the second round. Philipp Kohlschreiber (Bamberg) failed to make it through to the second round, losing to the Italian, Martin Vassallo Arguello, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 after two hours play. But Argentina's Guillermo Canas dominated his match and took only two sets to beat Dick Norman from Belgium 6-0, 7-5. He will now face ninth seed Florian Mayer of Germany. Good fortune was not with German Daniel Elsner, who headed home after the first round, losing to Spaniard Marc Lopez. (AP)
