Suyigama, Jankovic upset in first round

Bali: It was a day of upsets at the Wismilak International as Ai Sugiyama, Chanda Rubin, and Jelena Jankovic all fell in the first round to unheralded opponents. Second-seeded Sugiyama from Japan lost to her 165th-ranked compatriot Aiko Nakamura 6-4, 7-6 (7/1) in the opening match on centre court. Meanwhile, the fifth-seeded American Rubin went out in straight sets to Italian Tathiana Garbin 6-1 6-4, while Indonesian Angelique Widjaja struggled hard to eliminate eighth-seeded Jankovic from Serbia-Montenegro 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Fourth-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia easily advanced to the second round when her Japanese opponent, Akiko Morigami, retired due to a right wrist injury, giving her a 6-2, 3-1 victory. In second round matches, seventh-seeded Gisela Dulko of Argentina survived a first-set defeat before beating Italian Flavia Pennetta 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, while South Korean Cho Yoon-jeong stopped Kristina Brandi of Puerto Rico, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. In the doubles competition, the Russia-Spain pair of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario defeated Marta Domachowska of Poland and Galina Voskoboeva of Russia, 6-4, 6-3, while Australian duo of Casey Dellacqua and Nicole Sewell outplayed Indonesians Ayu Fani Damayanti and Septi Mende 7-5, 6-4.
