Paes-Rikl lose US Open final
Leander Paes and David Rikl have lost in the final of the men's doubles event of the US Open, defeated 3-6, 3-6 by Daniel Nestor and Mark Knowles.

Leander Paes and David Rikl's hopes of winning their maiden Grand Slam title were dashed when they lost in the final of the men's doubles event of the US Open in New York. Paes and Rikl, the 13th seeds, were beaten 3-6, 3-6 by Daniel Nestor of Canada and Mark Knowles of Bahamas. The Indo-Czech Republic pair were broken three times while Nestor and Knowles, the 2002 Australian Open champions, were not threatened at any point in the match. Mixed doubles It was double heart break for the India's Davis Cup star who lost in the mixed doubles with Martina Navratilova 4-6, 6-3, 3-10 in a third set super-tiebreaker to Australia's Todd Woodbridge and Alicia Molik in the semifinal. Paes and Rikl upset the top seeds and last year's champions Todd Woodbridge of Australia and Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman in the quarterfinals. Earlier, Paes and Rikl beat Spain's Rafael Nadal and Tommy Robredo 6-3 6-3 while Knowles and Nestor overcame the French pair of Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/5) in the semifinals. The Aussies will now take on fourth seeds Bob Bryan of USA and Russian Vera Zvonareva who ousted top seeds Nestor and Rennae Stubbs of Australia 7-5 6-3. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
