Zurich:Tatiana Golovin beat Maria Kirilenko of Russia 6-3, 6-4 Monday in the first round of the Zurich Open.
The 19-year-old Frenchwoman, who won her first two WTA Tour titles this season, will next face fifth-seeded Ana Ivanovic. Golovin lost to the Serb in the opening round in both 2004 and 2005.
Nicole Vaidisova also advanced, using 11 aces to post a 6-4, 6-2 win over Katarina Srebotnik, who committed six double-faults and failed to convert two break points. The Czech teenager will play US Open semifinalist Jelena Jankovic in the next round.
Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko disappointed Swiss fans when she beat Timea Bacsinszky 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands downed India's Sania Mirza 6-1, 6-4.
The tournament's seeded players begin Tuesday with Australian Open champion Serena Williams facing Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.
Seven of the world's top 10 players are at the tournament, including No 1 Justine Henin, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Amelie Mauresmo. Defending champion Maria Sharapova withdrew on Saturday because of a lingering right-shoulder injury. Martina Hingis pulled out with a hip problem.
