Munich:Kim Clijsters overcame a brave challenge from tour veteran Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario to progress to the semi-finals of the season-ending Sanex Championships in Munich on Thursday. The Belgian won in straight sets, 7-5 6-1, to set up a clash with in-form American Lindsay Davenport. Earlier, Davenport beat Jelena Dokic 6-4, 6-2 in the third meeeting between the pair in as many weeks. Clijsters was up against Spaniard Aranxta Sanchez Vicario in her quarter final match. Sanchez showed her top form with some top shots including a brilliantly executed cross court back hand with the score tied at one game all. But Clijsters replied strongly, breaking Sanchez to go up 4-2 with a down the line winner. With Sanchez proved why she is rated so dangerous even now playing this tournament for the 14th straight time once again used her backhanded cross court to telling effect breaking Clijsters' serve. Clijsters aided by some powerful serving held her serve tieing the first set at five games all as boyfriend and US Open champion Lleyton Hewitt looked on from the stands. The duel got really hot between the two in the 12th game when Clijsters returned almost everything that the ageing Spaniard had to offer. The youth of Clijsters got the better of Sanchez towards the end of the first set as Clijsters looked unstoppable on her serve lobbing winners in succession taking the first set 7-5 in 52 minutes. The second set was just the opposite of the first set. The Spaniard went down without much resistance as Clijsters wrapped up the second set and the match 7-5, 6-1. Clijsters now faces world number two Lindsay Davenport who disposed off Yugoslav teenager Jelena Dokic with an ace on match point to win 6-4, 6-2. The win keeps Davenport's chances of taking over the number one spot from Jennifer Capriati.
