Bangalore:Unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova, ranked 143, defeated 36th ranked top-seed Mara Santangelo 6-4 6-4 to wrest the Sony Ericsson International singles title in Bangalore on Sunday night. The 19-year-old giant-killer from Chernovgolovki, near Moscow, scalped World No 77 Tamarine Tanasugarn and top Indian player Sania Mirza, ranked 46, on way to her maiden title-clash. Shvedova, a replacement in the main draw for the 134th ranked Uzbekistan player Iroda Tulyaganova, deservingly took home 25,840 dollars and 140 points after steam rolling the topseed in 92 minutes. Young Shvedova's big serves and excellent court coverage put pressure on her senior partner, who had her right thigh tightly strapped, as the discerning Bangaloreans were treated to some superb tennis. She played better than me. I did my best, tried to do my best, great week for me except for the final, summed up Santangelo, who had a 9-0 record here going into the final, and had to be content with 13,520 dollars and 100 tour points after missing a Perfect 10. Earlier in the doubles, the Chinese Taipei pair of Yung-Jan Chan and Chia-Jung Chuang lived up to their top-seed billing when they beat Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei and Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 11-9.
