Hyderabad:Tennis sensation Sania Mirza will be unable to play for at least four weeks after tearing a ligament in her right knee during Qatar Open recently. The 20-year-old was admitted in a Hyderabad hospital on Saturday morning and an exploratory surgical procedure was done to check her ligament. ¶ "Had it been stretched beyond a certain limit, probably she would have needed a major operation," said Dr KJ Reddy, orthopaedic surgeon, Apollo Hospital. The orthopaedic surgeon who attended to Sania Mirza says it is fortunate that she did not continue to play the Qatar Open after injuring her right knee on February 26 in Doha. Sania was given anesthesia and an arthroscopy investigation was done on Saturday morning. "The nature of the injury is quite serious because it is a very important ligament and the fact that it is within physiological limit, will mean she has a chance to recover completely," said Reddy. Rehabilitation program Sania has been advised an intense physiotherapy and rehabilitation program by the doctors. This will mean that she will be out of action for at least four weeks. ¶ "She is a little disappointed of course that when she thought she was playing her best. She will not be able to compete at least in three tournaments. But we have to take it in our stride and we know she will be back firing on all cylinders," said Imran Mirza, Sania's father. This is not the first time that Sania's fitness has played spoilsport. She has had frequent injuries to her back and ankle. The Hyderabadi Hurricane will hope that her fitness trainer Heath Mathews will help her get back into shape faster than what the doctors say.
