Paes loses, India clinch tie 3-2 against Japan
Leander Paes loses to Satoshi Iwabuchi but India win their Davis Cup tie with Jan 3-2 to qualify for the World Group play-off.

Rohan Bopanna and Prakash Amritraj had won their singles matches Friday before Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi combined to win the doubles Saturday.
Paes and Bhupathi played the reverse singles matches Sunday and both lost. Bhuapathi lost to Kei Nishikori in the first match.
Leander Paes went down 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 to Satoshi Iwabuchi of Japan in the second reverse singles of the Asian Oceania Group I tie here Sunday.
