New York: Asian hopes for a Grand Slam singles crown at the US Open ended Saturday as Croatian 12th seed Marin Cilic ousted Japanese 17th seed Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3 to reach the last 16.
Cilic, whose eight career titles include crowns this year at Queen's and Umag, advanced to a fourth-round match against the winner of a later match between French 32nd seed Jeremy Chardy and Slovakia's Martin Klizan.
"I served well. I think that was the key," Cilic said. "He played really well in the tie-breaker. We both had a lot of chances in the match."
