New Delhi:
Hundreds of German troops in Kabul cheered on as their team beat Costa Rica 4-2 in the World Cup 2006 opening match on Friday. In celebration, the bar at their base gave out free beers to each soldier with officers describing the win as a great boost for troop morale. The stand off between English and German supporters in Frankfurt began when the two sides started taunting each other. The English fans were boisterous in anticipation of their team's opening match and the Germans were charged after their team's win over Costa Rica. It took riot police and a few arrests to defuse the situation. Optimistic Brazilians So confident are Brazilians of their team winning an unprecedented hexa that they are buying the replicas of the World Cup. They are hoping to join in the celebrations when their team brings back the real one. Jarbas Carlino is manufacturing more than 3000 cups this whole month and expects to sell all of them despite its reasonably expensive price tag of $15. Celebrity fans World Cup fever has not spared even the celebrity guests attending an American Film Institute Lifetime achievement event for actor Sean Connery. "England has to win or my dad would come from the grave and get me. I am a soccer fan," said actor Mike Myers. And while the football World Cup will never generate as much excitement in America as say the Superbowl, there is at least one supporter for the Team US. "Well, I could root for America, for God sake I am always for the underdog," said George Lucas, film director. Maybe the world wide hysteria generated by the World Cup is something Lucas might consider making a movie on.Topics mentioned in this article
